ENGINEERING DESIGN PROCESS
ISTE.4.0 - Students use a variety of technologies within a design process to identify and solve problems by creating new, useful or imaginative solutions. Students:
ISTE.4.a - know and use a deliberate design process for generating ideas, testing theories, creating innovative artifacts or solving authentic problems.
MONDAY - WELCOME BACK
I can learn the classroom expectations.
I can learn the classroom expectations.
1. Follow along with the slide presentation as I go over each slide.
If you cannot open this quickly, do not worry. You can just look at the big screen.

2. Look at the poster below. There are 4 roles when working in a group. We will talk about each role and how it contributes to the group, even if it is not a group activity.
3. When moving to a group it is not necessary to drag your chair across the room. Move to that area, then look for a chair that is near you to use. When you leave, put the chair back.
Let's try this: I will assign you to a table number. After I say so, move to that table, then find a chair. Sit quietly and wait for the next instructions. Please do not waste time. We will practice this until we get it right.
Wait for the next instructions.
Without looking, select one of the 4 cards on the table. Flip it over. This is your role for today's group.

The Supply Guy needs to go get the supplies for your group today. Supplies include: cups and pencils with an eraser on it.
4. First Cup Challenge. Your team will need to build this tower with the cups. Easy, but there is a catch. You must keep one hand behind your back and the other hand cannot directly touch any cups.
5. Return the supplies. Return the chair that you borrowed. Then move back to your computer and sign out.
Time for the STEM Assistant to start collecting name tags. If you are asked by the assistant to do something to help clean up, please do it. They are only reminding you of what you should be doing on your own.
6. We will prepare to exit the room. Remember to log off your computer, push in your chair, and walk to your number quietly. Stand quietly facing forward. We will get your belongings out of the library.
TUESDAY - STEM TEAM CHALLENGE
I can use the Engineering Design Process with a team.
1. Solve this puzzle.
2. I will tell you what table number you will work at today.
This year we will be using a journal for our challenges.
Write your name, homeroom teacher's name and your grade on your journal as neatly as you can.
3. We need to fill in the first 2 pages of your journal.

4. Turn the page. Let's get ready for your first STEM Challenge: Straw Towers
Using 10 Straws, 1 pair of scissors and 30 centimeters of masking tape, build the tallest free standing tower that you can.
You need to come up with a plan. Discuss the plan with the group and agree on the best one to try.
We will fill in your journal Title, Ask, Imagine, and Plan before you begin any of the building.

5. Your team has ____ minutes to build. Start when I say go.
Share your tower strategy.
Make sure I take a photograph of your team to put into your journals.
Clean up. Anything that cannot be reused, please throw in the trash can. Everything else goes into the tote.

WEDNESDAY - CARD TOWERS
I can follow the Engineering Design Process.
1. Watch this video.
2. I will assign you to a new table number today. You will get your journals back. Please select a blue card for today. The Supply Guy can go get the tote for your table.
The challenge title for Today is: CARD TOWERS
Your team is to build the tallest tower out of 10 cards and 1 sticker page. The tower must stand up on its own. You may use scissors if you want to. You will not get any more stickers, so plan how you will use them before you start.
3. As a team, start discussing your ideas for this challenge.
ASK: What is it that you are being asked to do or solve? Fill in this section of your journal.
IMAGINE: How are you going to do this? Busy Builder- you make the final decision on which idea to try today.
PLAN: All of you sketch out your plan. Your plans should all look the same since it is a group activity.

Make sure I take a photograph of your project when you are finished.
5. Share your successes and your failures. Be sure to document this in your journal.
6. Clean Up Time:

THURSDAY - FINISH JOURNALS
I can IMPROVE on the Engineering Design Process.
1. Play this game.
2. We have photographs to paste into your journals. These are for the CREATE sections of the last 2 challenges. You will need to trim out the photo to fit into that box nicely. Glue the back of the photo and then paste it into the journal.
3. I will be doing journal checks to make sure you have filled in all the sections for this week. You may work on helping me with organizing some kits or practice your typing on the computer.
4. Typing Lessons for free with no log in.
5. Clean up, sign off. Get ready to leave the classroom.
FRIDAY - FINISH YOUR PROJECTS
1. Find the words in the puzzle.
2. Free time on my webpage.
